The Blacklist

2014

Lee Tergesen plays Frank Hyland, the husband of Naomi Hyland, played by Mary-Louise Parker.

Naomi was once married to Raymond "Red" Reddington -- the central character played by James Spader.  She was known as Carla Reddington then. Frank, her current husband, apparently knows nothing of her former life with Red, with whom she had a daughter.

"The Blacklist" was a breakout hit in its first season, and Lee will have a recurring role in the show's second season.

NBC describes the series' premise as follows:

Reddington is a former government agent who became one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives. After decades, he mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: He will help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist, Ranko Zamani, under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth "Liz" Keen, an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico.

Zamani is only the first of many on a list that Red has compiled over the years: a "blacklist" of politicians, mobsters, spies and international terrorists. He will help catch them all... with the caveat that Liz continues to work as his partner. Red will teach Liz to think like a criminal to "see the bigger picture" - whether she wants to or not.

EPISODE GUIDE: Lee-centric summaries

2.1 Lord Baltimore (Sept. 22, 2014)

The Blacklister of the week is Lord Baltimore, an all-star data miner who uses a person’s Internet presence to create a dossier for clients to track down their targets. In this case, Lord Baltimore is using a set of criteria that points to Red's ex-wife, Carla, who’s been under witness protection for the past 20 years.

Carla Reddington is now Naomi Hyland, and we first see her in the middle of a dinner party, on her husband's lap (Lee-as-Frank Hyland). The party is rudely interrupted by a team of armed FBI agents who want to whisk her away to another new life.

Before that can happen, however, she is abducted by another baddie, Berlin, who wants to use her as a means to take revenge on Red.

2.4 Dr. Linus Creel (Oct. 13, 2014)

The mystery at the center of this episode concerns a series of homicides that involve mind control, but the episode has a strong thread involving Lee's character.

The show opens with Naomi telling Red that she refuses to go underground to start a new life for a second time. She has to tell Frank about her history with Red, and after much discussion, the couple decides to reject Red's protection and return to their home in Philadelphia. "Carla Reddington was a miserable housewife married to a miserable man," Naomi declares to Red about her former life. "That woman no longer exists." She proclaims that Frank has given her stability.

But has he really been that solid? It turns out that Frank was having an affair with a woman named Monica. With this knowledge, Red manipulates Frank into accepting his protection.

Naomi distrusts Frank's reversal, suspecting Red threatened Frank's two daughters, but Frank insists it's all about keeping her safe. Red arranges for new papers for Frank and Naomi and they are driven off to their new life (along with Monica's dog).
