Penoza (aka The Life)
Pilot, 2012
Lee Tergesen has been cast as Steven Tomlin in the pilot for an
ABC drama titled "Penoza," which is based on a Dutch series of the
same name.
"Penoza" (alternately titled "The Life") centers on a family related to the Russian mob. A
central figure in a drug-running operation is killed just as he had
been discussing getting out of "The Life" to protect his wife and
three children. After his assassination, his widow is forced to
adopt her husband’s role in a crime syndicate in order to protect
her family.
Lee's role in this drama is as a foot-soldier for the
drug-runners. He wife, Dina, has expensive tastes, and their home is
filled with lavish art and designer furnishings.
Here is one scene described in the pilot script: Loud music
plays as Steven works out on a rowing machine. He's stressed, trying
to figure things out. He stops. Snorts a spoonful of coke. Dina
enters. Watches him for a moment. Then comes up behind him.
Wordlessly, she begins to rub his neck. Then kiss it. Her hands move
up his thighs.
Although the script indicates that the setting for the show is
Sausalito, California, Lee is headed to Vancouver for filming.
The pilot was written by Melissa Rosenberg, who will serve as the
showrunner and co-executive producer. She says to think of the show
as a female-led "Breaking Bad" or "Sopranos."
Among her writing and producing credits are the "Twilight" movies
and the "Dexter" TV series.
